Lore
Aeneas, the son of prince Anchises of Troy and the goddess Aphrodite (Greek) or Venus (Roman), features prominently in Greco-Roman mythology. In Homer's Greek works, Aeneas appears a minor character in the Iliad, where he is twice saved from death by the gods - first by Apollo then Poseidon - for the as-yet-unknown destiny to the found the city Lavinium, Rome's progenitor.
Aeneas features more prominently in Virgil's late Roman work, the Aeneid. Aeneas, commanded by the gods to flee the city & rebuild, is one of the few Trojans not killed or enslaved when Troy fell. In search of a new home, Aeneas begins a brief love affair with the Queen Dido, helping her found and build the city of Carthage before being reminded of his duty by the messenger god Mercury, sent by Jupiter. Aeneas leaves in secret; when Dido learns of this, she utters a curse that forever pit Carthage against Rome, an enmity which culminates in the Punic Wars.
Finally, Aeneas arrives in Italy where Latinus, king of the Latins, allows he and his fellow Trojans to re-settle in Latium, a region of central western Italy. Latinus receives a prophecy that his daughter, Lavinia, must be betrothed to one from another land, despite her existing betrothal to Turnus, king of the Rutuli. Aeneas and Lavinia are married, and Turnus declares war. Aeneas's forces prevail, Turnus & Latinus are killed and battle, and the city of Lavinium is founded.
Here, the Aeneid abruptly ends due to Virgil's death. Other texts, such as Livy and Ovid's Metamorphoses, say that following his death, Venus asked Jupiter to make her son immortal. Jupiter agrees, and the river god Numicus cleanses Aeneas of his mortal parts and, being anointed with ambrosia and nectar, is made a god.
